We’ve built up this idea in our culture that our love stories should emanate Hollywood romance or something from a story book and that our significant other should forever make us happy and fulfill our every need. We’ve developed this idea that every one of us has a “Soul Mate”, some magical person on this earth who alone can complete us. And that until we find them we are only half of an individual. This idea has distorted the model of marriage and relationship that God has set up for us in scripture. In fact, it is exactly contrary from what scripture teaches. The terms “Soul mate” and “better half” came from the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato. He taught that men and women were made in one body, but separated by the gods…
